Today I wanted to share a little bit about feeding your baby. Now as you may know, I have two children. My daughter is now eight and my son is three. Both were primarily breast fed, however, my daughter had a great deal of difficulty getting started with nursing and experienced some failure to thrive. As you can imagine, that freaked me out! I wanted to nurse and tried so hard to make it work, but she just wasn't getting it and loosing too much weight.
The nurses at the hospital intervened pretty quickly with a lactation consultant and we began supplementing both in the hospital and at home with formula. I had always planned on nursing and was so set on it, that it didn't really occur to me, that there might be problems. When there were, I was panicked since we needed something immediately and I had not done any research on formula and was pretty clueless on brands, the different benefits each might provide...well just about everything!
One thing my husband and I realized pretty quickly was that formula can really add up! With name brands costing more than store brands, we liked the idea of saving money but didn't want to make the wrong choice for our baby. Obviously we wanted the best for our baby, as all parents do!
Questions about infant feeding were my main concern as we became new parents and I wasn't alone in that. A new survey of pediatricians (conducted by SERMO, the largest online network exclusively for physicians, in conjunction with Perrigo Nutritionals) looked at the most common questions new moms will ask, and one concern rose to the top: 52 percent of pediatricians say the number one topic of questions from new moms is about infant feeding.
Perrigo Nutritionals Store Brand Formula’s “Pulse of Pediatricians” Survey Results:
A new, nationwide survey of pediatricians looked at the most common questions new moms will ask. 97 percent of pediatricians say feeding is one of the top three categories new moms ask about and more than half (52 percent) of pediatricians say feeding is the number one topic new moms ask about.
- “Pooping” questions were second (43 percent of respondents). Sleeping was third (41 percent).
- The results were based on a nationwide survey of pediatricians conducted by SERMO, the largest online network exclusively for physicians.
- The American Academy of Pediatrics and other experts agree on the benefits of breastfeeding; these experts also agree that infant formula is a safe, science-supported, nutritious means to nourish babies.
- Most moms don’t know that the FDA strictly regulates formula to keep little ones safe, so store brand formulas, like Wal-Mart’s Parent’s Choice and Target’s Up & Up, are nutritionally comparable to national brands like Enfamil® and Similac® and meet FDA standards.
- By switching to store brand formula, a family can save up to $600 per year without compromising quality. Visit www.storebrandformula.com for formula coupons and more information.
The strangest questions shared above crack me up, but in all seriousness, my advice for new parents would be that there are no strange questions! If you are wondering or concerned, don't hesitate to ask your pediatrician or the nurses. They know you have questions, they know you are clueless, they are expecting lots and lots of questions...okay, well maybe not the one about kite surfing but you know what I mean!
Plus, it's better to ask a medical professional involved in your or your baby's care. Their answers will be more specific and related to your needs, yes the advice books and input from friends and family is important but I have found our pediatrician's input to be the most important in many to most situations and you'd be surprised the wide range of topics he or she can give well thought out recommendations on.
Readers, what did you think about the results of the survey I shared above? What questions did you have as a new parent?

At what age will a baby sleep through the night?
ReplyDeleteI asked this question repeatedly in those early days.
I'm surprised that 71% of pediatricians say all formulas are the same.
ReplyDeleteWhat to do about a teeny weeny who doesn't seem to like hardly anything for foods.
ReplyDeleteI'm not surprised at the findings - eating, pooping, sleeping, basics that are so important! and you don't want to get it wrong!
ReplyDeletePerrigo has wonderful baby formula's and are so well known in the medication world. I am proud to say my daughter works for them.
ReplyDeleteI had problems with my last child getting enough breast milk. I always wondered at what age were they suppose to go on cereal? I put her on cereal early because she was not getting enough to eat and she was always hungry.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to know a lot of pediatricians believe all formulas are the same. The non name brand formula's are cheaper, so you can save money.
ReplyDeleteWe bought store brand for awhile and surprised you can save up to $600 a year
ReplyDeleteThis result is great to learn. 71 percent of pediatricians believe all infant formulas are basically the same; the brand doesn't matter.
ReplyDeleteHow do I know when to start feeding my baby solids?
ReplyDeleteI found it interesting that by switching to store brand formula, a family can save up to $600 per year without compromising quality.
ReplyDeleteInteresting results! I didn't realize that store brands were just as good because of FDA strictly regulating formulas.
ReplyDeleteOne question I remember having when I first became a parent was how often does a baby at certain ages need to eat and how much?
ReplyDeleteHow many times a day I need to give formula to my baby?
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that store brand formulas are nutritionally comparable to national brands and meet FDA standards
ReplyDeleteI use to have questions about weight gain and loss and when to do certain foods.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised how high up pooping questions were.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised that doctors basically consider all formula equal considering the price is far from being similar.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest question was whether to keep feeding on a schedule.
ReplyDeletethank you
Question: Should I wake a sleeping baby to feed him?
ReplyDeleteI always had questions about sleeping habits. I realized that it was not the later you put them to sleep, the later they sleep in in the morning. INstead, the earlier you put them to sleep, the more rest they will get and the longer they sleep. I had to learn this the hard way as no one had ever talked about this with me.
ReplyDeleteI was very surprised at the survey results that people had a lot of concerns and questions about pooping. I did not know it was as much of a concern as it is.
ReplyDeleteHow often should a baby be pooping
ReplyDeleteI was surprised sleeping wasn’t a bigger concern than pooping. I had a pediatrician tell me that as long as it wasn’t bloody, any baby poop was pretty much normal, and that babies can go up to 5 days without pooping and that was still normal. It’s amazing how concerned we are with poop!
ReplyDeleteI remember asking about sleep positions and when to transfer a baby to their own room.
ReplyDeleteWhen do you find time to sleep
ReplyDeleteI was surprised at the results - shaunie on rafflecopter
ReplyDeleteOne of my first time mom questions was "what do I do with her so I can shower??" lol
ReplyDeletehow much i should feed them

Is my baby eating enough?
ReplyDeleteI used to always want to know when I would actually get a full night sleep
ReplyDeleteI think its cool that 71 percent of pediatricians believe all infant formulas are basically the same; the brand doesn't matter.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a new parent, I couldn't figure out how to "interpret" my baby's cries. My question would be, what do I listen for?
ReplyDeleteDede
Wow, saving $600 a year is a BIG chunk of change!
ReplyDeleteDede
I am a bit surprised as I didn't think store brands stood a chance to the major brands.
ReplyDeleteHow long between feedings is necessary.
ReplyDeleteWhen my oldest was a newborn he would sometimes go 3-4 days without pooping. I was always worried that there was something wrong, but my pediatrician assured me it was normal.
ReplyDeleteI always wondered if I was feeding him too much or too little.
ReplyDeleteI am not surprised by the findings at all - this is true of many different items, the only difference is packaging/price.
ReplyDeleteWhen can I start feeding my child solids
ReplyDeleteI'm not surprised with the results. I think they make sense.
ReplyDeletehow often should I feed the baby
ReplyDeletethe results aren't surprising; very logical
