Summer Day Camp Project #4: Thumbprint Pendants

It's the first day of August and along with the new month comes a new craft from the Summer Day Camp series!  This time the featured project comes right from me, so no need to blog hop to find the how-to!

I'm excited to share a fun and easy way for kids to create wearable art, with their very own thumbprint pendant!  Gather your supplies:

Crayola Model Magic

Non-Toxic Ink, in a color of your choice

Fine Tip Permanent Ink Pen

Skewer, Pencil, or Pen to create hole for hanging

Ribbon  

Pull off a small clump of Crayola Model Magic, a little larger than dice sized is a good size to start with. Use a little ink to color the modeling compound.  We turned our pink by stamping on it several times with a mini pad and then mixing in the color by kneading it like dough.  Add ink and mix in until you like the intensity of the color.

Roll your modeling compound into a circle and gently flatten to make a round pendant shape.  The diameter should be around one inch and big enough to fit a thumbprint.  Thickness should be around a little less than a quarter inch.  Make a hole for hanging.

Ink up your thumb and press into the pendant.  Let it harden and dry overnight on wax paper.  Use a thin line permanent marker to turn your thumbprint into your favorite animal. We found ideas of thumbprint art, here and in books by Ed Emberley.  Gently brush on a layer of clear nail polish to seal your drawing. 

After it dries add a string and wear your art!  These little thumbprint drawings are so precious, little crafters might want to create one for their Mom too.  It's a sweet little keepsake, just write your child's name and date on the back.  I hope you liked our installment of the Summer Day Camp!  Thank you to Alanna at The Craft Nest for inviting us to participate.  To see all of the projects, click here.
